Sixteen years old

“HOW LONG IS THIS going to take?” Tucker groaned from outside the open bathroom door and stomped his feet like a kid being told to go to his room.

I swiped glitter eyeshadow onto my lid and stepped back, studying my makeup. “I’m almost done.”

He hit his forehead against the wall. “You said that twenty minutes ago.”

I ignored him as I fixed my lipstick for the hundredth time. The dark color was bleeding at the corners.

“We have to go. Halloween is all about the treats,” Tucker announced with a stupid grin. “Kids get candy and we get . . .” His face turned suggestive as I pushed him back from the bathroom.

“You think you’ll find a treat tonight?”

Tucker sighed and stood up straight, showing off his broad chest under his Roman toga. “My dear Ellis. I am the treat.”

Dixon stuck his head around Tucker and frowned at my makeup. “Are those caterpillars?”

“Eyelashes,” I said, putting one on.

Dixon’s head tilted to the side. “What’s wrong with the ones on your face?”

“Dixy,” Sandry called from downstairs. “Leave her alone. We’re going. Make sure to set the bowl on the porch for all the kids.”

“Where the hell is Easton?” Ben shouted.

“He went to get Sara.” Dixon’s voice came from his room.

A dark feeling swirled in my chest and I didn’t miss the way Tucker’s eyes watched me.

Three more swipes and I declared my makeup finished, setting my brush down harder than I meant to. Tucker gave me a pointed look.

“What?” I challenged.

He lifted a shoulder at me. “Just waiting for you to stop being stubborn and actually talk about what’s making you break stuff.”

“I’m not being stubborn.” I pushed him out of the way as I walked into my room, grabbing my black high heels from the closet and stepping into them. Tucker watched me wobble for a few moments before he moved over to stand next to me. I put out my hands to hold onto his arm and stomped my foot as the heel caught on the carpet.

Tucker’s eyebrows went up in an exhibit A way. “Your victims disagree with your claims of nonviolence.”

I groaned. “I just don’t know why he’s going with Sara and we aren’t all going together.”

“Sara is his girlfriend.”

“Of, like, three months. This is our thing.”

“El.” He spoke my name like he wanted me to understand something that was just outside of my reach. The softness made the word feel like a punch.

“I’m not jealous. I like Sara.” It was true. Mostly. Sara was smart and kind. She wasn’t arrogant even though her dad was the mayor and her mother was rumored to have money from an early Apple investment. They threw a giant fundraiser every Halloween to support the food bank in town. And Sara spoke to every person with the same amount of respect. She read books with one leg pulled up against her body and hair tucked behind an ear. She played softball and coached a kids’ team for free.

Sandry loved her.

That was the whole problem with Sara.
